- Piazza Unità d'Italia – the largest waterfront square in Europe A monumental square open directly to the Gulf of Trieste, surrounded by Habsburg palaces and cafés with over 200 years of tradition. Caffè degli Specchi has stood here since 1839 – ideal for an aperitif while overlooking the sea. In the evening, the square transforms into the living room of the entire city.
- Grotta Gigante – the largest tourist cave in the world A record-size accessible cave in the world (114m high dome) just 12 km from the center of Trieste on the Karst plateau. Stalagmite columns taller than 30 meters, an underground pendulum to measure earth movements. A completely different world just 20 minutes by bus.
- Miramare Castle – romantic architecture by the sea The snow-white romantic castle of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg on a cliff above the Adriatic (1856), with spacious English gardens and originally furnished rooms. Free entry on the first Sunday of the month. Bus No. 6 directly from the center in 20 minutes.
- Rione di Cavana & streets of old Trieste The historical fishing district between the Canal Grande and the sea – narrow streets, crumbling facades in pastel colors, wine bars and osterias without tourists. This is where traces of James Joyce can be found, who lived in Trieste for 10 years and wrote most of Ulysses here. You can see the plaque on his apartment.
- Karst – wine villages and prosciutto The Karst plateau 30 minutes above the city – a world of white limestone rocks, dark green pines, and picturesque villages like Lipica (home to Lipizzaner horses) or Štanjel. In season, temporary wine taverns (osmice) are held here where winemakers pour Teran wine directly from their cellars.
